4 Reasons to Consider a Plunge Pool Over a Swimming Pool

Manuel Douglas

Adding a pool to your property can boost its value and provide a wonderful way to keep cool during summer. However, you don't necessarily have to go for a swimming pool — instead, you can opt for a plunge pool.

Put simply, a plunge pool is designed more for cooling off and relaxing than for swimming laps, so they're much smaller than swimming pools. As a general rule of thumb, you can think of plunge pools as bigger than spa pools but smaller than swimming pools, and they offer a number of compelling benefits.

Here are just four reasons you might want to build a plunge pool instead of a swimming pool.

1. Takes Up Less Space

The most obvious benefit of a plunge pool is that they take up far less space. This is often particularly important when you don't have much outside space to work with, something that is becoming increasingly common for new homes built on relatively small lots. Even if you do have space for a swimming pool, you might not want to devote such a large portion of your yard to it. If so, plunge pools represent a good compromise.

2. More Eco-Friendly

Since plunge pools are considerably smaller than traditional swimming pools, they require far less water. Additionally, pumps used for plunge pools are much smaller and require much less power than those used for swimming pools, which means they consume far less energy. As such, plunge pools boast a relatively low environmental impact. As an added plus, the reduced water and energy demands will also make them cheaper to run.

3. Easier to Maintain

Plunge pools are also much easier to maintain than standard pools. Their smaller size means that less debris gets into the water and that what does get in is quicker and easier to remove. You can simply throw a cover over a plunge pool to have it protected in seconds, and you'll also spend less time adding chlorine and wiping down the sides. This all means more time enjoying your pool and less time maintaining it.

4. Easier to Heat

Finally, it's worth remembering that swimming pools can be hard to keep warm during colder months. In contrast, most plunge pools come equipped with a heater that is perfectly capable of keeping the water nice and warm without consuming too much energy. That means you can keep using your plunge pool even when temperatures start to drop and traditional swimming pools need to be covered.
